Domaine Marc Morey & Fils: Four Generations of Winemaking Excellence

A Legacy in Chassagne-Montrachet
Since 1919, Domaine Marc Morey has been a family-run estate dedicated to producing exceptional wines. Located in the renowned village of Chassagne-Montrachet, home to fewer than 400 residents and 44 winemaking families, the domaine has played a significant role in cementing the village’s global reputation for producing some of the finest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines. The Morey family has been at the heart of this legacy, intertwined with other notable winemaking families such as Coffinet, Pillot, and Colin.

Today, Sabine Mollard, the granddaughter of Marc Morey, leads the estate with the same rigor and dedication to terroir that has defined the family for generations. Sabine oversees the domaine’s 9.5 hectares of vineyards located across Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, and Saint-Aubin, producing approximately 60,000 bottles annually.

Commitment to Sustainable Winemaking

Domaine Marc Morey follows a strict regimen of lutte raisonnée, or sustainable farming, respecting the environment while maintaining the integrity of the terroir. The domaine uses natural and organic treatments only when absolutely necessary to protect the vines from rot, mildew, or oidium. By embracing techniques such as Guyot simple pruning for Chardonnay and Cordon de Royat for Pinot Noir, Sabine ensures that the vines are healthy and yield grapes of the highest quality. Careful pruning, leaf pulling, and soil management encourage the vines’ natural development, promoting vibrant micro-flora in the soil.

Meticulous Vineyard Management:

Harvest season at Domaine Marc Morey is the busiest time of year, requiring meticulous planning. Sabine coordinates a team of 30 pickers, carefully selecting grapes at their peak ripeness and balance from nearly 20 vineyard parcels. This attention to detail ensures that the wines exhibit the bright acidity and rich flavors characteristic of the region’s finest wines.

Crafting Wines of Elegance and Finesse

Sabine’s approach to winemaking is centered on preserving the freshness and unique terroir of each vineyard parcel. For the white wines, the grapes are pressed using pneumatic presses and allowed to settle in stainless steel tanks before being transferred into 228-liter barrels for fermentation. The wines undergo a 10-month élevage, with batonnage (stirring the lees) to enhance the complexity and richness of the final product. The result is white wines that are both expressive in their youth and structured for long aging.

For the red wines, grapes are carefully selected and fermented in a combination of whole clusters and destemmed fruit. Pre-fermentation maceration and regular remontage (pumping over) ensure the extraction of color, depth, and tannins, while aging in oak barrels adds structure and balance. Sabine aims to produce reds that are elegant yet powerful, capable of aging gracefully.

A Global Reputation

Domaine Marc Morey has earned its place as one of the most reputable estates in the Côte de Beaune, with wines sold by 18 importers in 14 countries worldwide. A small selection of wines is reserved for local restaurants and discerning private clients who regularly visit the domaine. Known for their finesse, freshness, minerality, and opulence, the wines of Domaine Marc Morey truly reflect the best of Burgundy.
