Domaine Philippe Colin: A Family Legacy in Chassagne-Montrachet

Founded in 2004, Domaine Philippe Colin is a premier estate in the heart of Chassagne-Montrachet, located in the Côte de Beaune region of Burgundy. Philippe Colin, a winemaker from a lineage that has cultivated wines for generations, established the domain after splitting from the family’s larger estate, Colin-Deléger. Today, the estate spans 5 hectares and produces both red and white wines, spread across 11 appellations. Philippe’s focus remains on respecting nature, while his son, Simon, now manages 9 hectares of vines, continuing the family’s winemaking tradition.

A Family-Driven Philosophy

In the Colin family, generations have succeeded one another, producing great vintages and preserving the family’s winemaking traditions. Philippe passed most of his vines to Simon starting with the 2021 vintage. This gradual handover allows Philippe to dedicate time to both winemaking and managing Topiary Wines, an estate he owns in Franschhoek, South Africa. Despite his international interests, Philippe remains deeply connected to Burgundy, where he continues to offer a balanced range of white and red wines.

Sustainable Viticulture and Winemaking

Philippe follows a minimal-intervention approach, known as lutte raisonnée, which emphasizes sustainability and the natural development of the vines. The grapes are handpicked at optimal ripeness, ensuring freshness and balance in the wines. In the cellar, modern technology is combined with traditional techniques to closely monitor the fermentation process while keeping the focus on preserving the integrity and freshness of the fruit. The wines are aged in French oak barrels for 10 to 15 months, with careful management to avoid overpowering the natural flavors.

Signature Wines

The estate’s portfolio includes some of the most prestigious appellations of Chassagne-Montrachet, such as Premier Cru Les Chaumées, Les Vergers, and Les Chenevottes. These white wines are known for their vibrant acidity, elegant fruit expression, and subtle oak influence. The reds, primarily from Pinot Noir, reflect the finesse and structure that characterize the region’s best wines.

In summary, Domaine Philippe Colin continues to thrive as a beacon of tradition, quality, and innovation. Philippe’s respect for nature and dedication to producing authentic, fruit-driven wines have ensured the ongoing success of this family-run estate, both in Burgundy and abroad

Expertise

Vines are cultivated using a 'very' reasoned approach, avoiding unnecessary intervention. Manual harvesting is followed by vibrating sorting tables for the reds. Whites undergo direct pneumatic pressing, with alcoholic fermentation beginning in tanks. Reds are fully destemmed and undergo cold pre-fermentation maceration. Aging lasts 10 to 12 months in 500-liter barrels exclusively, followed by 3 to 6 months in stainless steel vats. Technical waxing of the whites is done just after bottling (2-3 mm of wax applied above the cork, from Chassagne village to Chevalier since 2011). Tin capsules have been replaced by soft black decorative wax.
