Domaine Pierrick Bouley: A Tradition of Excellence in Volnay

Located in the heart of Volnay, Domaine Pierrick Bouley has been passed down through six generations of winemakers. Today, Pierrick Bouley leads the 9-hectare estate, which is divided into 41 distinct parcels, with an average vine age of over 50 years. After working full-time in the family business since 2009, Pierrick took over the domain in 2014, building on the legacy of his father, Pascal Bouley.

Sustainable Practices and Organic Certification

Pierrick has undertaken a significant shift towards environmentally respectful viticulture. Inspired by biodynamic principles, he has steered the estate toward organic farming, with 2023 marking the first vintage to receive official organic certification. The domaine avoids using chemical fertilizers, insecticides, and weed killers, and all vineyard work is done by hand, ensuring that the vines are treated with the utmost care and respect for nature.

Winemaking Approach

In the cellar, Pierrick employs a natural winemaking process. The grapes are hand-harvested, sorted, and destemmed, with no external yeasts, enzymes, or bacteria used during fermentation. Since 2017, no sulfur has been added during winemaking, and the wines are aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, with 10% to 30% new oak depending on the cuvée. This minimalist approach allows Pierrick to craft elegant and expressive wines that highlight the unique terroirs of Volnay, Monthelie, and Pommard.

Diverse Terroirs and Exceptional Wines

The estate’s holdings include several premier crus, such as Clos des Chênes and Les Champans, which are known for their finesse, depth, and ability to age beautifully. Pierrick’s wines, particularly his Volnay and Pommard cuvées, are celebrated for their purity, structure, and balance. The estate also produces a small amount of white wine from the Aligoté grape, offering a unique addition to its predominantly red wine range.

Pierrick Bouley’s commitment to sustainability, respect for tradition, and passion for winemaking ensure that his wines continue to reflect the best of Burgundy’s rich history and terroir.

Expertise

Pierrick, who favors elegant, refined, yet powerful and long-lasting wines, conducts his harvests by hand, carefully sorting the grape bunches before proceeding with a natural aging process. The wines are aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, with 30% of the barrels being new.
