Domaine Huguenot: A Historic Estate in Marsannay

Domaine Huguenot, located in the town of Marsannay-la-Côte in the Côte de Nuits, has been passed down through 10 generations since its founding in 1790. The estate, currently managed by Philippe and Valérie Huguenot, has grown to cover 23 hectares, with vineyards in Marsannay, Fixin, and Gevrey-Chambertin, including the prestigious Grand Cru vineyard Charmes-Chambertin.

Family Heritage and Evolution

Philippe Huguenot took over from his father, Jean-Louis, who had expanded the estate significantly during his tenure from 1968 to 1993. Today, the domaine spans across some of Burgundy’s most esteemed appellations. Under Philippe’s leadership, Domaine Huguenot became certified organic in 2013, after beginning the conversion to organic farming in 2007. This shift reflects a deep respect for the environment and the family’s dedication to preserving the terroir for future generations.

Terroir and Sustainable Practices

The estate’s vineyards are spread across Marsannay, Fixin, and Gevrey-Chambertin. Marsannay is unique in Burgundy, being the only village allowed to produce red, white, and rosé wines under the AOC classification. The soils vary from limestone and marl to clay, giving the wines from Domaine Huguenot a wide range of expressions. The estate produces wines with a commitment to minimal intervention, allowing the terroir to shine through in each bottle.

Winemaking Approach

Domaine Huguenot focuses on traditional, hands-on viticulture, with organic methods employed across all their vineyards. The wines are aged in oak barrels, with an emphasis on minimal sulfur use and natural fermentation. Their reds, particularly from Marsannay and Gevrey-Chambertin, are celebrated for their structure and elegance, while the whites offer minerality and freshness.

Signature Wines

Some of Domaine Huguenot’s standout wines include:

Marsannay “Champs-Perdrix”: A red wine with complex flavors of red berries and earthy undertones.
Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru “Les Fontenys”: Known for its rich texture and fine tannins, made from vines around 40 years old.
Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru: A flagship wine that showcases the estate’s commitment to quality, offering depth, power, and longevity.

Domaine Huguenot continues to embody the rich winemaking heritage of the Côte de Nuits, while embracing sustainable and organic practices that ensure the land’s health for generations to come.
