The Estate
2018 marked the debut vintage for Domaine Elodie Roy, but the journey leading to this moment is nothing short of extraordinary. And the future? A star is born!
Elodie Roy grew up in a winemaking family in Cheilly-les-Maranges, located at the southernmost tip of the Côte de Beaune. Her parents managed 25 acres of vines, selling grapes to négociants, with Elodie and her sister helping out whenever they could. Witnessing the arduous nature of the work as a teenager, Elodie initially decided not to follow in her parents’ footsteps.
She pursued a degree in law and took a job at a bank. However, within six months, she realized she had made a mistake. Determined to follow her true passion, Elodie returned to school, this time to study wine. Despite her parents’ concerns, who believed in the stability of a career in banking, her mind was made up.
At that time, her father was not ready to hand over the family vineyards. So, after an internship in the Rhône, Elodie took a position at Domaine Anne Gros in Vosne-Romanée, where she worked closely with Anne Gros for 11 years. During this time, she gained experience in all aspects of running an estate. When Anne’s children returned to the domaine full-time, the timing was perfect for Elodie to return to her roots and take over the family estate in “Les Maranges.”
In 2018, at the age of 38, Elodie took the reins of the family domain—24 acres of old vines in excellent condition that had previously been sold to local négociants along with a small family production.
Elodie approached the estate with the intention of implementing the methods she learned in Vosne. The use of chemicals has been eliminated, and the soils are now plowed. The proportion of wines sold to négociants will gradually decrease as the press has already taken notice of this exceptional talent in the southernmost appellation of the Côte de Beaune.
Elodie’s commitment to sustainable and respectful viticulture is evident in her practices. She uses natural grassing in her plots and prioritizes the use of organic products. Her versatility shines through in her winemaking, as she vinifies both white and red wines from the three iconic grape varieties of Burgundy: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Aligoté.
Though Elodie is just getting started, she is already a rising star in the wine world. She is poised to carry the torch for two female-driven associations in the area: Femmes et Vins de Bourgogne and a new initiative called Mi-Filles / Mi-Raisins, where she, along with 10 other female winemakers, promotes the “small” appellations.
This is undoubtedly a “Once upon a time” story, one that we are thrilled to watch unfold as Elodie Roy continues to make her mark in the world of wine.
