Domaine Matray: A Tradition of Excellence in Beaujolais

Domaine Matray, located in the village of Juliénas in the Beaujolais region, is a family estate that has been passed down for five generations. Since 2017, Célia Matray, after gaining experience in the Rhône Valley and New Zealand, has returned to the family estate, bringing a fresh perspective while maintaining the traditional values of the domaine. Her influence, alongside the leadership of her parents Lilian and Sandrine, has helped further the estate’s reputation for producing high-quality, expressive wines.

Sustainable Viticulture

The estate is committed to sustainable and environmentally conscious practices. Vineyards are planted at high density, with no chemical treatments used. Instead, natural and organic methods are employed to preserve the health of the vines and the terroir. This dedication to minimal intervention continues in the cellar, where winemaking incorporates the use of whole grape clusters to enhance the structure and complexity of the wines.

Distinct Cuvées

Domaine Matray offers three key cuvées, each with a distinct identity:

Les Paquelets: From a 2-hectare plot west of Juliénas, this wine is grown on clay and alluvial soils with blue granite, offering minerality and freshness. The vines were planted between 1952 and 1985. One-third of the grapes are fermented with whole clusters in tanks to maintain a vibrant and fruit-forward profile.

Vieilles Vignes:

Made from a 1-hectare plot of old vines planted in 1939, this wine benefits from the depth and complexity that comes from blue granite soils. Two-thirds of the grapes are vinified with whole clusters, and the wine is aged for 10 months in oak barrels, resulting in a structured and elegant wine.

Bacchus:

This wine is a special selection from the same Vieilles Vignes plot but aged in new oak barrels for 18 months. With only 1,000 bottles produced annually, Bacchus is the estate’s most exclusive offering, showcasing power, depth, and the finest expression of the terroir.
