Welcome to Domaine Thevenard: A Legacy of Passion and Excellence
Introduction Nestled in the picturesque region of Uchizy in the northern Mâconnais, Domaine Thevenard is a testament to generations of dedication, passion, and a deep connection to the land. From producing apples and pears to cultivating some of the region’s most distinguished wines, the Thevenard family has turned their vineyards into a thriving enterprise, blending tradition with innovation.
A Rich History The story of Domaine Thevenard begins in 1891 with Claudius Lafarge, the family’s first ancestor to settle in Uchizy. Claudius was a man of many talents—sheep breeder, cereal producer, and viticulturist. Over the years, with the inevitable changes brought by time and succession, grape production became the family’s primary focus. For generations, the grapes were entirely handed over to the local cooperative winery.
Today, the fourth generation, represented by Pascal, and the fifth generation, with brothers Matthieu and Gaétan, are leading the estate into a new era. Their commitment to the vineyard is unwavering, with 12 hectares now fully dedicated to viticulture, primarily planted with chardonnay, and two select plots of pinot noir.
A Vision for the Future Matthieu and Gaétan, the dynamic duo at the helm, are the driving force behind the transformation of Domaine Thevenard. In 2020, they embarked on an ambitious journey to modernize their operations, starting with a state-of-the-art stainless steel winery. This fully thermoregulated facility features an automatic nitrogen blanketing system and allows for gravity-fed filling of 150 barrels across a 350-square-meter space.
For five months, their chardonnays age in oak barrels—some new, some used—ranging from 228 to 500 liters, all without sulfite. The wines then undergo an additional five months of aging in vats, with sulfur added just before bottling in a carefully measured proportion. This meticulous process ensures that their wines can be enjoyed even in their early youth, showcasing the terroir’s true essence.
Craftsmanship and Terroir The mineral-rich soils of the Mâconnais, combined with natural farming methods, give Domaine Thevenard’s wines a unique character. The brothers prioritize natural fermentations and respect lunar cycles, allowing the wines to develop their distinct personality. Their efforts were recognized in 2023 when they earned the High Environmental Value label, a step towards their goal of achieving organic certification.
Expanding Horizons Domaine Thevenard continues to grow alongside its vineyards. After the 2023 harvest, they acquired nearly 2 additional hectares in Chaintré, extending their reach into Mâcon-Village, Pouilly-Fuissé, and Pouilly-Fuissé premier cru “Chevrières.” With each new vintage, their reputation expands, and their clientele grows, drawn by the quality and authenticity of their wines.
Conclusion Domaine Thevenard is more than just a winery; it is a reflection of a family’s legacy, their love for the land, and their pursuit of excellence. Whether you’re a seasoned wine enthusiast or just beginning your journey into the world of wine, a visit to Domaine Thevenard promises an unforgettable experience, where you can taste the fruits of their labor and the history embedded in every bottle.
