The domaine is located on
Domaine La Croix Montjoie
Perched on the hillside of Tharoiseau, overlooking the beautiful village of Vézelay, Domaine La Croix Montjoie is a relatively new but impressive estate in Burgundy. Founded in 2009 by Sophie and Matthieu Woillez, the domaine has since expanded to encompass fifteen hectares of vines. This exceptional estate reflects the couple’s passion for winemaking and their commitment to creating high-quality wines in harmony with nature.
The estate is located within the Bourgogne Vézelay appellation, which stretches across four picturesque villages: Vézelay, Asquins, Saint-Père, and Tharoiseau. The unique terroir of the area, characterized by clay-limestone soils and favorable southern and southeastern exposures, allows Domaine La Croix Montjoie to produce some of the finest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines.
Before founding their own estate, Sophie and Matthieu had extensive experience in prestigious wine regions such as Sauternes and the Rhône Valley. However, they sought to create something of their own. After exploring the Beaujolais region and other parts of Burgundy, they found the perfect opportunity in Tharoiseau, where well-planted vineyards awaited a new owner. The old farm at the base of the vineyard, once part of the local château, was restored and transformed into a winery, creating a stunning setting for their winemaking endeavors.
The vineyards of Domaine La Croix Montjoie are unique in Burgundy. Unlike many other Burgundian estates where vineyards are scattered across multiple parcels, the Woillez family has their entire vineyard in one single block—a rare feature. The vineyards, located just behind the winery, offer a stunning panorama and resemble a miniature version of the famed Corton hill. The vines are planted on clay-limestone soils, with more clay than limestone, which imparts complexity and richness to the wines.
The wines of Domaine La Croix Montjoie reflect their terroir and the dedication of their winemakers. Their Chardonnay wines, sold under the Vézelay appellation, carry evocative names such as L’Impatiente, L’Élégante, and La Voluptueuse, highlighting the distinct personalities of each wine. In addition, they produce Pinot Noir under the Irancy and Bourgogne appellations, showcasing their versatility and skill.
This magical estate, with its breathtaking views and deeply rooted passion for winemaking, offers visitors an immersive experience in the heart of Burgundy’s rich wine culture.
